Today, as the sun was going down and I was enjoying the warm breeze, something caught my attention. No, it wasn't the every-day sound of sirens going off, or traffic rushing by.
It was something that I hadn't heard in a while.
As a kid, you do not pay much attention to responsibilities or work, or relationships. Usually your thoughts are centered around yourself and you live, should I say, in the moment. And then your dad gives you a handful of change and a dollar bill so you can go buy a treat made of sweet confections from the guy riding around in a ridiculous white and partially coloured truck.
In that point in time, you are so excited that you rush after it, worried that the truck might leave before you can get something sweet and cold. For some reason or another, its just something that makes things seem a little better.
I find it funny how something so menial can make myself feel so thoughtful. Maybe it's sentimental attachment and the happy weather. Or maybe it's that.... it's not so bad to live in the moment and revert back to something as little as waiting for the ice cream man to come around the corner.
For whatever reason, that little tune playing out in the distance with children following quickly after it made me smile and wish I actually had some change so I, too, could chase after him. Perhaps, all those important adult things in life really are not all that important anyway.
Pop was great about making things okay, and you know, he was always first in line when that truck came around the corner. I think that he had the right idea. Everything else could wait. Don’t let those "important" things ruin what you love, cherish, expect, and wait so excitedly for. Run to it, and do not let it get away from you. Those small, sweet things that you have in life... those are what help get you by and make you smile years down the road when you hear an ice cream truck coming around the corner.
Thanks, dad.
PS- choco tacos and bomb pops ROCK.
